In 1951, he won a Pulitzer Prize for Sophie's Choice, which was made into a movie in 1982 starring Meryl Streep and Melvyn Douglas. In January 2003, he published his memoirs, Lie Down in Darkness: Memoirs of a Life on the Edge.
